Race Start Sequence
Practise the start sequence (high strokes, build, settle) so the crew and cox are in sync for the first 500 m.
Overview
- Category
- Race Prep
- Duration
- 10–15 min
- Equipment
- Cox box, eight
📋Instructions
- 1Agree the sequence: e.g. 'Five high at 40, build ten, settle to 34.'
- 2From standing still: 'Ready … row!' — first stroke together, then into the high strokes.
- 3Call the high strokes: count them clearly (e.g. 'One, two, three, four, five').
- 4Call the build: 'Build ten …' and count so they build length and power.
- 5Settle: 'Settle to 34' and hold the race pace; keep calls to rhythm and length.
💡Tips
- ✓Practise both sides (port and stroke side start) if your crew might race either way.
- ✓Record the sequence and listen back so you can tighten timing and clarity.
