Head of the Charles Regatta Guide
Master the world's largest regatta with this coxswain guide to the Charles River course. Six bridges, two decisive turns and constant overtaking.
HOCR 2026: October 16–18, Boston & Cambridge · Last updated October 5, 2026
The Charles River Course
- About 3 miles (4.8 km) upstream, from just below the BU Bridge to the finish past Eliot Bridge
- Six bridges: BU, River Street, Western Avenue, Weeks Footbridge, Anderson and Eliot
- Two decisive turns: the 90° port turn at Weeks and the long Big Turn into Eliot
- Buoy lines mark the course; the hull must stay on the racing side of them
- Flat-water basin above the Charles River Dam, so current is negligible
- Wind is the main variable; a westerly means a headwind down the finish
- Crews start one after another in quick succession, so passing is constant
- Crowded banks and launch docks mean wash and traffic on race day
Key Landmarks & Navigation
- Start: just downstream of the BU Bridge, near BU's DeWolfe Boathouse
- BU Bridge (1st bridge): centre arch
- Magazine Beach: first bend to starboard, follow the green buoys
- Riverside Boat Club, then drift slightly to port to line up the next bridges
- Powerhouse Stretch: River Street (2nd) and Western Avenue (3rd), centre arches
- 1-mile mark: stripe on the starboard wall between River St and Western Ave
- Weeks Footbridge (4th bridge): 90° turn to port, roughly halfway
- Weld Boathouse and Anderson Bridge (5th bridge): centre arch
- 2-mile mark: start of the Big Turn to port past Newell Boathouse
- Cambridge Boat Club, then Eliot Bridge (6th bridge)
- Final bend to starboard, then about 500 m to the finish
Race Strategy
- Settle the rhythm before the BU Bridge, it's a long race
- Take the green buoy line at Magazine Beach but don't hug it, watch for crews launching
- Use the straight Powerhouse Stretch for your first planned pushes
- Plan the Weeks turn in advance, it's where most time is won or lost
- Come out of Anderson pointed to starboard and pick up the red buoys
- Stay tight to the red buoys through the Big Turn, don't swing wide
- Leave the buoy line once you can see straight through Eliot's centre arch
- Follow the green buoys closely round the last bend, the outside costs seconds
- Final 500 m: empty the tank and keep rowing past the line
Bridge-by-Bridge Strategy
Upstream order, start to finish.
- 01BU Bridge
Centre arch. Sit mid-river before the start for a straight line through
- 02River Street
Centre arch. Start of the Powerhouse Stretch, steer a straight line
- 03Western Ave
Centre arch. Hold your line toward the Cambridge side, don't turn early
- 04Weeks Footbridge
Centre arch. The 90° port turn, exit pointed at Anderson's centre arch
- 05Anderson
Centre arch. Exit angled to starboard, then onto the red buoy line
- 06Eliot
Centre arch. Hug the buoys in, cut off them once the arch opens up
Steering the Weeks Turn
Weeks Footbridge is a 90° turn to port, and coxes disagree on how to take it.
Turn early
Start a wide arc 20–30 strokes after Western Ave so most of the turn is done before the bridge. You come out of Weeks already pointed at Anderson's centre arch.
Turn under the bridge
Aim the bow through the middle span, just right of Lowell House's blue dome, and make the port turn as you pass under. This is safer if traffic is heavy.
Whichever you choose, practise it beforehand and tell your crew where the turn starts.
Pre-Race Preparation
- Study the official course map in the current HOCR Athlete Guide
- Read the current HOCR rules on buoy, arch and interference penalties
- Watch race footage, especially of the Weeks and Eliot turns
- Pick your sighting marks for Weeks and Eliot during practice
- Know your bow number and when you start, then plan for crews ahead and behind
- Prepare your crew for roughly 15-22 minutes of racing, depending on boat class
- Check the wind forecast, it changes the finish and the turns
- Plan launch, warm-up and marshalling times with your coach
Race Day Execution
- Line up in bow-number order and follow the marshals
- Call each bridge and arch early so rowers aren't surprised
- Watch for buoys that have drifted out of place
- Overtake decisively and steer clear of slower crews
- Yield the racing line if a faster crew is closing behind you
- Keep calls calm and specific through the turns
- Push hard through the final 500 m
- Keep rowing after the line and follow the marshals out
HOCR Success Tips
Timing
Roughly 15–22 minutes depending on boat class. Pace accordingly.
Strategy
Win time on the Weeks turn and the Big Turn, then sprint the last 500 m.
Navigation
Centre arches, the right side of every buoy, and no surprises at Weeks.
